MAKE GOOD ART

publication

This experimental publication is based on the speech “Make Good Art” by Neil Gaiman. This commencement speech encourages all creatives to make glorious, messy mistakes, to “make good art” no matter what life throws at them, and discusses themes such as hesitation and unsureness.
The book was created in the style of a punk zine because the way these zines were created was often very messy and experimental, not second-guessing artistic decisions. The whole idea behind punk was to use the materials you had on hand and just make some crazy stuff, similarly to the message Neil is giving in his speech.

DESIGN

The body type is a typewriter-like font that had a bit of gritty texture to match the feel and concept of the book. The display type was made using a manual embossing label maker, since these were often used in the creation of punk zines. The imagery is inspired by the content found in punk zines, a sort of xerox, lo-fi, grunge aesthetic. The book was made in black and white, since zines were created on a low budget and usually weren’t printed in color. The column grid is flexible so the elements could move freely while also having some sort of structure and rhythm.
