The Island of Dr Moreau by H.G. Wells

“The Island of Dr. Moreau” is an 1896 science fiction horror novel by English author H.G. Wells. The novel is narrated by Edward Prendick, who finds himself shipwrecked on an island dominated by a mad scientist named Dr. Moreau, where he is experimenting on hybrid human-animals.
The objective of this project was to typeset a classic novel and use typographic detail to tie in the themes of the book through our choices of typefaces, layout, and format. I took this project a step further and created a book cover sleeve to tie in imagery with my typographic choices. When creating the cover, I pushed myself to be photo-based since I typically use illustration in my other projects. I wanted to embody the feeling of being experimented on to represent the horror the doctor is putting on these creatures. Inside the novel, I chose a display typeface that looked gritty and weathered, like it had been stranded on an island, and a body typeface that was classic yet organic.
